The Morgan Dollar ------- is one of the most prominent coin series in US coinage. Anywhere US collectable coins are sold you are sure to find a Morgan Dollar there. During the 19th Century when battles over monetary standards raged, and in an era when gold was in limited supply but the dominant medium of exchange, colossal amounts of silver flowed from the mines in the American West. Many people believed increasing the money supply with Silver would significantly improve economic conditions. The 'Bland-Allison Act of 1878' was highly supportive of silver mining interests, and the act required the government to buy and produce millions of ounces of silver each month. In twelve years over 400 million coins were minted, though rarely circulated. Then in 1900 America adopted the 'Gold Standard' and the Morgan Dollar ceased to be coined after 1904. Nearly half the coins minted were melted down and the bullion sold to Great Britain after the Pittman Act of 1918. The Collection-------Every coin in this collection has been carefully selected by our consigner. I am certain he has spent many an evening sourcing those high grade examples both of NGC and PCGS coins. There are some very early labels on some of the coins including the 'Green & the early Blue labels of PCGS. These are often collectable in their own right. LOTS---------Each lot has a hidden reserve, that will be revealed in the LIVE auction if not met naturally through the pre-bidding part of the auction. As a guide to price we have put the low reserve as an indicator of the bid required to obtain the lot and the high reserve has been taken from recent sales of likewise sold coins.
