England: (1660-85) Charles II 1664 'Elephant below bust' Gold 2 Guinea. First year of issue, First Portrait of Charles II facing right. Obverse: Designer is John Roettier. The Elephant mintmark is below bust. Legend: CAROLVS II DEI GRATIA . Reverse: In centre, four interlinked 'C's & four crowned cruciform shields between four sceptres. Legend: MAG BR FRA ET HIB REX 1664. Edge: Vertically Milled. The coin with a beautiful reddish lustre and detail in all the right places to both obverse and especially the reverse, has a minor edge flattening done at the time of the strike. Full edge detail remains. A stunning coin in hand and first year of the issue which only adds to the desirability. A rare find and one we are pleased to offer in auction.
