Description
ENGLAND (1554-1558) Phillip & Mary 1554 Silver Shilling. Obverse: Features both Mary & Phillip of Spain portraits facing Latin inscription PHILIP ET MARIA DG REX. ET REGINA ANGL - Philip and Mary by the grace of Gold King and Queen of the English. Dated 1554. Reverse Legend POSUIMUS DEUM AJIUTOREM NOSTRUM - We have made God our helper, with the mark of value on the reverse. No shillings were struck during Queen Mary's brief reign, however quantities were produced between 1554 and 1558 after an Act of Parliament pronounced women were unfit to rule alone. The coin promoted duel Sovereignty and also boosted Phillips popularity. Graded by NGC XF40 Top Pop! Extremely difficult to find in this high grade. A rare and sought after coin for a collector.
