GREAT BRITAIN: (1837-1901) Queen Victoria Young Head 1848 London Mint Shield Gold Half Sovereign. S3859. Obverse: Head of Queen Victoria facing left. Type A1 First (Smallest) Young Head. Legend: VICTORIA DEI GRATIA with date below. No designer's initials W.W. at the truncation. Obverse 1 by Marsh (1838 - 1858): The bust is smaller than on later coins, the front ribbon on the top of the Queen's head is noticeably wider than the other ribbons. The lower truncation does not enter into the area of the legend. Reverse: Garnished shield quartered with the arms of England, Scotland, Ireland & surmounted by a Royal Crown.
