Description
GREAT BRITAIN: (1837-1901) Queen Victoria 1855 Young Head 'Douro' Shipwreck Treasure London Mint Shield Gold Sovereign, Obverse: Head of Victoria Young Bust facing Left, Second Large Head, W.W. in Incuse, Date below. Legend: VICTORIA DEI GRATIA Reverse: Plain Shield with Repositioned Legend & surmounted by a crown with laurel branches on each side. Legend: BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID:DEF: Edge: Milled. S3852D Graded By NGC AU 53 Certification No.1762118-142 The 'Douro' Royal Mail fleet was on her last leg of what was fated to be her final voyage, just two days away from Southampton. On the 1st April 1882 late evening the 'Yrurac' Spanish Steamer hit the Douro Starboard Side in the area of the main mast, such was the impact that the Spanish Steamer rebounded and hit a second time in the area of the aft boat. Six passengers perished (no children and just one women servant who refused to board the life raft), and the Captain, four senior officers, as well as the Chief and Second Engineer. In 1949 the search began to find the shipwreck after a note was found written by Thomas Pickford (Project initiator's father) which read 'Douro 1882 £53,000 Bay of Biscay'. Ten years of research saw the recovery project put forward to Marine Salvage Specialist Sverker Hallstrom. It wasn't until 1995 they discovered were the Douro resigned. In 1996 the huge cargo of shipwreck gold was auctioned in 'Spink and Christie's'. This Sovereign is one of those Rare and wonderful Cargo. Don't miss this opportunity to buy such a desirable and interesting coin!
