Description
ENGLAND: (1685-1688) King James II Gold 1688 Gold Five Guinea. Obverse: Second Laur head facing left, Legend: IACOBVS.II.DEI.GRATIA Reverse: Crowned cruciform shields, sceptres in angles, raised lettering QVARTO on the edge. The coin has some wear to the obverse portrait and does also have an edge knock at 8'o clock, however there is no sign of solder or prong damage to the edge/ rim. No obvious evidence to suggest the coin has mounted before, however we cannot offer a guarantee that it hasn't so do bear this in mind if bidding. The coin itself is extremely desirable not only because it is the largest denomination of it's time, but because very little coinage was struck for James II due to his short time on the throne. Rarely do we see Five Guineas to the auction and this is a rare and desirable coin for any early milled collector. Good Fine Grade.
