Description
RHODESIA: (1964-1970) Queen Elizabeth II 1966 Proof Gold One Pound Coin. One Year Type - On 11th November 1965, Rhodesia was declared by Prime Minister Ian Smith to be an independent Dominion. This led to sanctions being imposed by both the British Commonwealth & the United Nations, as the Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) was not recognized as legitimate. In 1966, the 'rebel' Rhodesian Government decided to issue a set of Gold Coins to commemorate the First Anniversary of the Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI). Now known as Zimbabwe. Obverse: Queen Elizabeth II bust with tiara facing right. Legend: ELIZABETH THE SECOND. Reverse: In centre a Lion holding a tusk that divides the date. Legend: RHODESIA above & denomination ONE POUND below. Edge Milled. The coin is presented in original case of issue and outer box. (not pictured)
