ENGLAND : BRISTOL SILVER SHILLING TRADE TOKEN DATED 1811- OBVERSE: Bristol arms, ship and castle within garter, snake and scales of justice above. Lettering BRISTOL TOKEN FOR XII PENCE. REVERSE: Lettering PAYABLE BY MESSRS FRAS GARRATT, WM TERRELL, EDWD BIRD, LANT BECK & FRANS H GRIGG at centre, and the legend reads 'TO FACILITATE TRADE, ISSUED IN BRISTOL AUGT 12. Edge Milled. These facinating tokens are an insight into the history of our nation, as it wasnt' until the 19th Century that Silver tokens were produced and they embraced the denominations of the day. They were struck up and down the Country and daringly used openly defying the government to compete with Coins of the Realm. This example is in a good Fine Condition and an interesting talking piece for collectors.
